Description

Evaluating Tree Defects

Ed Hayes has a bachelor’s degree in Forest Management and a master’s degree in Plant Protection from Virginia Tech at Blacksburg, Virginia.  He has over 30 years of field experience in forest and shade tree health care.  He has conducted well over 100 Tree Risk Assessment Workshops for tree care professionals since 1988 across the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK.

These guidelines are intended to provide the information needed to evaluate the potential of a tree to fail.  The guidelines presented are just that, only guidelines.  No absolute rules can be made due to the natural variability of trees and their defects.  All tree failures cannot be predicted with guidelines alone.  Common sense, experience, and professional judgement are required of the trained Arborist.  It is up to the trained Arborist on the site to determine the risk potential of a tree to fail.
