Description

The First edition of the Compendium of Conifer Diseases was published in 1997. Much has changed since then, even in the staid world of forest pathology. Forests grow under increasing stress from ever-growing human populations, newly described and invasive pathogen species, and a changing climate. New
sections on stress-related disorders and climate change have been added to this edition, and five “new” invasive Phytophthora diseases are presented. Forest pathologists are also changing. More than half of the contributors are new to this revision.
Diagnostic tools have evolved considerably since the first edition, enabling more precise identification of pathogens, greater understanding of population genetics, and better understanding of evolutionary relationships among various species. Nearly all the sections have been updated at least, if not rewritten, on the basis of our advancing understanding of the diseases. The most visible changes are the added focus on Christmas tree diseases and the modernization of taxonomic nomenclature.
