Description

Best Management Practices Tree Support Systems Best Management Practices Guide.

Tree failures are often associated with defects or conditions that weaken tree structure. When tree failure is likely to impact a target and cause damage, it might be necessary to recommend tree removal, extensive pruning, or the installation of a tree support system to reduce risk.

Of these three general risk mitigation options, installing a support system will often have the least impact on tree health, aesthetics, and function in the landscape. it is important to keep in mind, however, that not all risk can be mitigated by installation of a tree support system.

Tree support systems can be divided into four general categories: cables, braces, guy and props.

This BMP describes proper installation and maintenance of cables, braces, guys, and props that can effectively limit the movement of branches, leaders, or entire trees. It also serves as a companion publication for the American National Standard for Tree Care Operations—Tree, Shrub and Other Woody Plant Management—Standard Practices (Supplemental Support Systems).

Topics in this BMP include:

  • Installation Tools
  • Cabling
  • Bracing
  • Guying Established Trees
  • Propping
  • Guying Newly Planted Trees
  • Glossary of Terms
